*~{MASQUERADE}~*
Because the Magician hides...
Because the Magician hides...
Lin Shaolee stared into the mirror, in a dimly light washroom on that warm autumn night. The long black haired Asian wiped off the remains of his make up and glanced over at the crumpled white dress sitting on the sink, a few inches away. The Chronos Number gazed back at his reflection, question of seeing if any marks of make up remained on his face.
Number X was in his eraser's uniform, the tie undone to make his tattoo visible. His blue eyes were crisped for an unknown reason and his flowing black made was tied back in a ponytail. He ran a few slender fingers along the side of his neck, down to the center of his collarbone, where the X-shaped tattoo, sigh that he belonged to Chronos, laid.
The high class assassin had been sent here for two simple reasons: to distract Train Heartnet and eliminate the enemy of Chronos. Ridding of his target was not a difficult task for the young Asian man; the question was, how do you distract Black Cat, the legendary ex-assassin turned sweeper?
Being the Magician and proudly living up to his title, it would have been a piece of cake if Shaolee didn't happen to have feelings for that certain sweeper. No one was meant to know, seeing how his love was forbidden and how impossible it was. Number I, Sephiria Arks, somehow happened to have found out and sent him on this particular mission for the sole purpose of forgetting Heartnet.
Number X had completed the hardest part of his task already and was impatient to achieve his goal, but there was no question of revealing himself to the public in that ridiculous disguise. He blamed it all on Jenos, who had the great idea of facilitating his task by simplifying his costume. He went a bit too far, the raven haired young man admitted silently to his reflection.
"You'd knock down any poor soul looking like that, Shao," his friend had teased him a few hours ago.
The Chronos Number had given him a good kick between the legs and would have felt better if what he said wasn't all true. He didn't even need to change his face, fact that made him feel uneasy. His smaller-than-average built also helped out, seeing that any normal man of his age would have been easily unmasked. But he was the Magician, and he was the only one to take off his mask.
Shaolee sighed while grabbing his material and dumping them into a trashcan. All proof of his presence was to be eliminated, along with the victim. He needn't worry about the cameras and security measures, Chronos having sent people beforehand to deal with it. He didn't really need to accomplish anything, a back-up plan having been elaborated even if Sephiria believed in his success. He wasn't going to fail her either.
He pulled out a gun from the inside pocket of his vest. They didn't even let him use his precious Seiran. But a change of weaponry wouldn't affect his performance. So, with his heart still pounding, the black haired assassin exited the washroom in the greatest silence.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Train Heartnet was wandering aimlessly around the ballroom. The party going on under the world of the world-wide known millionaire interested him little, while said-millionaire did a lot. He was his target this time, with a huge bounty on his head.
Black Cat had no idea how he was able to conceal his identity this well until he actually met the man. Contrasting enormously to his wanted poster, the man he saw was practically half a century younger. The fact only spiked the talented sweeper's curiosity even more.
Some of the guests seemed to recognize him as well as other sweepers undercover, but the person in question was oblivious to the danger surrounding him in his own house. It didn't help that Chronos was also after him.
The only reason Train knew he wasn't the target of their attention was based on a very coincidencial meeting (he obviously did not know of Number I's intentions). He happened to meet no other than Lin Shaolee, the Chronos Number he had met numerous times during the Creed Diskenth incident. Ex-number XIII was still surprised he had not been replaced by anyone yet; maybe they were holding onto the faint, if not non-existent, hope that he would return? Never had he heard of a cat coming back to a master it had betrayed.
Black Cat smiled as he recalled the meeting he had with his 'acquaintance'. He remembered what shock he had when he saw the Magician in his strangest attire yet and then the even bigger shock he received when he realized he thought it suited the young Asian man well. The loose dress hung on his feminine curves perfectly and his raven colored hair free of its usual binds swayed behind him as he made his way over to Train.
Number X would have done everything to avoid him; the high class sweeper knew that very by the look he gave when he spotted him among the crowd. But, much to both their surprises, the assassin came up to him anyways. Black Cat's smile widened as he replayed the scene in his inner theater. The Magician was so certain his disguise would work; and how wrong he had been. It took him one look to see through the clothes and make up.
Train stifled a chuckle as the thought that Jenos was the one behind his looks crossed his mind. The Lucky Number was one of the few people who were aware of his feelings towards the young Asian man. He had also been of a great help in revealing to him Sephiria's plan in advance. The brown haired sweeper smirked. There was no way he'd let Shao forget about him.
"Hello there," Train greeted as the young 'woman' stopped in front of him.
"Hello," 'she' returned his greeting. "You are...?"
"Train Heartnet," the sweeper replied while mentally congratulating himself.
"Ah-urm, nice to meet you, Train-san."
Said-person mentally chuckled. Shaolee wasn't that great of an actor than he thought; or was it nerviosity he discerned behind that mask of calmness? Last he recalled, the Magician had perfect control of his emotions. The brown haired sweeper also noted that the tone of his voice was only slightly higher than his usual one.
The two then chatted about everything and nothing as the part around them went on, which ended with Train inviting Shaolee to dance.
"You haven't told me your name," Black Cat commented with a mischievous smile.
"Urm... my name..." the Asian man had mumbled incoherently. "Call me... Linda. My name's Linda."
Train had laughed inwardly at the originality of the pseudonym. Did his presence really affect the young Asian man that much? He'd want everything but Shaolee to have forgotten about him. Even if they were rather cold to each other on their first meeting, their relationship improved with the time they spent in the Sweeper Alliance.
It wasn't long before his partner came up with a reason to leave him. With a few words of farewell, Shaolee had disappeared into one of the hallways leading to the garden.
Train ran a hand through his chestnut hair as he sighed. It would soon be time that Chronos made their move; he would take the occasion to get the bounty to himself. Sven and Eve were waiting for him outside, in case the target would think of fleeing.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Shaolee's hands were shaking when he arrived at the top of the staircase leading to the second floor. Drops of cold sweat hung on his face as he proceeded into one of the hallways giving onto a small inward balcony stationed right above the ballroom. He knew Chronos would have cleared the section out so that he could work in the biggest secrecy; the sign of 'Entry Forbidden' hanging near the entrance of the hallway witnessed the preparations made beforehand.
The black haired eraser quickened his pace as he arrived at his destination, immediately stooping down into the shadows so that no one would spot him. What he didn't notice was the Black Cat's heated gaze on him, from the opposite side of the ballroom.
Number X loaded his gun silently and then aimed. His hand shook, therefore forcing him to use both, which complicated the task. He bit down onto his bottom lip as he let the trigger go off. A deaf sound of the bullet whizzing towards its target caught his ear for a second before the sound of it hitting the ground echoed through the hall.
Panicking screams soon rose and he realized he missed his target. Biting his lip until he drew blood to prevent the tears from overflowing, the undignified Chronos Number retreated. It was a good thing Sephiria-san had a back-up plan for him. He hadn't expected Train's presence to have such an effect on him.
He could hear Jenos and Baldor's voices shouting orders and the sound of more gunshots go off, from all three sides. The young Asian man had no time to worry about his companions; they were able assassins who could take care of themselves. He just ran down the stairs and into the hallway he had followed earlier, planning to escape from the garden. A car would be waiting for him at the edge of the millionaire's residence.
Train had heard the gunshot long before it hit the marble floor. Seeing the two Chronos Number's sudden arrival shook his senses and he automatically decided to lure his prey out. With gunshots and a few lightning speed moves, he was able to frighten the criminal enough to make him run a few feet before being blocked by the erasers.
The brown haired sweeper gave Jenos an insisting look before receiving a nod of agreement. He knew very well that with Baldor there it would be a difficult to keep the target alive, but he knew Number VII would do all his possible to prevent any deaths.
With that small assurance Train ran down and followed Shao's trail outside. He arrived into the garden just long enough to spot the black haired eraser jump run over the fence surrounding the territory. He immediately followed.
"Shaolee!"
Number X froze in his tracks, his heart beating fast. He turned around hesitantly and bit down on his lip not to gasp as he spotted the person he liked most standing a few feet away from him.
"T-Train-san?" he whispered, barely loud enough for his counterpart to hear.
"Number X," the sweeper replied as he advanced.
The assassin didn't budge, much to his own disappointment. His legs felt as if they were stuck in place, and even though his heart wanted to stay, his conscience told him to run away. When the ex-Number XIII reached out to grab his hand, he jumped and flushed a violent shade of red.
"T-Train-san! I need to go!" Shaolee practically gasped. "And-and how did you know I was here?"
"Hmm?" Black Cat mumbled. "I only know a certain 'Linda' was there to 'distract' me from interfering with Chronos' business."
The young Asian man bit his lip and turned away. How did he see through his disguise? Wasn't he the Magician? It was all Jenos' fault if he figured it out. If only he didn't listen to the Lucky Number... Why did he listen, then? Because he wanted Train to recognize him?
"T-Train-san... I really need to go," he finally said, in a desperate voice that uncovered his nerviosity.
"Do you want to go?" the sweeper whispered into his ear.
"I-I..." the assassin was turning redder by the second, embarrassed by the pleasure the other one took in teasing him.
"Sephiria-san is wai--"
His sentence was cut short as Train's lips posed themselves on his own. It was brief and light, but the kiss rendered him nonetheless breathless and flustered. Shaolee looked up at the brown haired young man with wide eyes, as if not understanding all that had happened.
"Why...wh--what did you do?"
Train found it cute how the usually cold and merciless assassin was now utterly defenseless and disoriented by him.
"I kissed you," he replied simply.
"Wh-why?" Shaolee stuttered.
"Because I like you."
The young Asian man's already wide eyes grew even larger and he lost balance as his legs let go under him. The sweeper caught him before he could hit the ground and looked at him with an amused expression.
"Didn't you have to go?" he asked teasingly.
Shaolee only nodded before standing straight and turning around to run away. Train frowned and ran his fingers through his hair as he watched the assassin go.
"So, what happened back there with Train?"
The black haired Chronos Number dealt a punch onto the side of his friend's arm, trying to hide his blush from him. Jenos laughed at his friend's expression when he saw it.
"Shao, did you tell him?" Number VII asked after his counterpart calmed down.
"N-No..." the other one murmured, suddenly feeling guilty.
"You better," was all the black haired assassin replied before walking away.
Shaolee stared out the window. "Yeah, I better..."
Because I don't care about how impossible it may seem. I love Train.
